When I left the Art Institute of Chicago on Monday I declared, "I have inspiration for the rest of my life!" Well that may be a little bit of an exaggeration, but I do have enough inspiration to keep me busy in my art journal for a long while.
This week I made three backgrounds based on paintings from the Art Institute.
When I saw the painting above I was immediately drawn to the circle in the bottom center that is filled with dots.
I had originally thought about carving a stamp that mimicked that look, but decided to just paint it instead.
I love the way this background turned out. I'm wondering if I might just leave it alone and not add anything else. Hmmmmm.
It was the colors that dragged me towards this next piece.
I also really liked the way the writing was separated from the image. Made me think it might be a good design for a scrapbook page with a lot of journaling. But in the meantime I translated it into my art journal:
And you may remember this piece from my post on Tuesday:
I love that it's bright colors and yet distressed. I focused on recreating that distress in my art journal:
This is the most literal of the inspiration pieces and it feels a little contrived where the original feels natural. But I think that's okay. Who knows what this page will grow up to be?
Working from a beautiful masterwork painting was a phenomenal way to banish that intimidating blank page. I hardly had to think, I just painted and played. It was awesome! I highly recommend grabbing a great work of art when you're looking for a kick of mojo!
