Have you heard of the 100 Day Project? It’s a challenge described as a “creativity excavation.”
“It’s about unearthing dormant or unrealized creativity by committing to a daily practice everyday for 100 days. Creativity is a skill. The more we practice, the more skilled we become. Practice takes time. Practice takes commitment. Practice is a radical act in this speeded up world. Through practice, we develop a creative habit. Through habit, we reconnect with and know ourselves again as a creative being.”
It all started in 2008 and has evolved over time. The current incarnation involves sharing your creative project on Instagram every day using at least two hashtags: #100DayProject and then a custom hashtag of your choosing that begins: #100Daysof….
The hashtag I’ve chosen is #100Daysof15minuteBALZERfaces (cramming the Balzer in there because – after a quick search – I discovered that someone had already done #100Daysof15MinuteFaces. So much for being original.)
Can you guess what my project is based on my hashtag?
I’m thinking, yes you can.
Here are the rules I made for myself:
- Set a timer for 15 minutes. I can use less time, but I can’t use more.
- Any method of creating a face is acceptable – drawing, painting, collage, whatever.
- Any surface is acceptable – envelopes, scrap paper, deli paper, watercolor paper, plastic, canvas, whatever.
And after doing the first face a fourth rule:
- No redos even if I hate it.
This is an opportunity to push myself to work faster, be creative, experiment with materials and stop being so darn judgmental about what I create. It's low risk, low commitment (15 minutes a day) and I'm hoping it's a good experience!
Here is my first face:
As I said, I'm not in love. You can see a fast forward video of it being created start-to-finish HERE.
Many more faces to come! You can follow my progress on instagram and I’ll be posting images here on the blog every now and then.
Are you participating in the #100DayProject? Let me know your hashtag in the comments section so that we can all follow each other’s progress and keep the motivation going for the next 100 days!
Thanks for stopping by!
