Classes, Classes, Classes!
May 23, 2011
I've got lots of fun classes coming at you this summer!
A new session of my Journal Quilt class at The City Quilter is starting soon!
When: June 3, July 8, August 5 • 12-2pm
Where: The City Quilter: 133 West 25th Street (between 6th and 7th) • New York City
Contact: The City Quilter Website, 212-807-0390, quilters@cityquilter.com
The Journal Quilt Class
Warning! This class is addictive! Each month we experiment with a new art quilting technique. We mix structured journaling activities with free form design lessons. Each month you will create a unique 8.5x11" quilt that tells your story! All levels welcome.
You do not need to know how to quilt to join the class. Most of what we do is surface design that can be applied to your fabric or paper art! I love the class because I enjoy checking in with all the talented ladies, sharing our art and snippets of our lives!
I'm super duper excited about a brand new venture with The Ink Pad:
Art Journaling Club
When: Tuesdays June 28, July 26, August 23, September 27 • 7pm-9:30pm (you do not have to attend all sessions)
Where: The Ink Pad: 37 Seventh Avenue (at 13th St.) • New York City
Contact: The Ink Pad website, 212.463.9876, theinkpad@aol.com
Sign up for one Tuesday night or for all four sessions! In this class we will be sharing our journals, talking about all things art journaling, playing in our art journals, and each class will feature at least one super cool new technique for you to experiment with in your art journal, on cards, on scrapbook layouts, or any artistic project you've got in mind!
If you've been reading my blog for any time at all you know how passionate I am about creating an art journaling community. As the title of this class suggests, this will hopefully be an ongoing class/club where we can explore new techniques and share our art journaling journey throughout the year!
Later this summer I'll be offering another workshop at The City Quilter:
When: Saturday, July 16 • 11:30am-5:30pm
Where: The City Quilter: 133 West 25th Street (between 6th and 7th) • New York City
Contact: The City Quilter Website, 212-807-0390, quilters@cityquilter.com
Mixed Media Quilt
In this exciting new class we’ll be painting fabric and then collaging it to create a unique quilt. You’ll be able to choose from four different images, or create your own! Not only will you learn some simple ways to paint up your own fabrics, but with this easy collage technique you’ll be able to “paint” with fabric to create new images! Students should be comfortable with a sewing machine and know how to finish and bind a quilt. Knowledge of free motion stitching is helpful, but not required.
I'm headed back to the Ink Pad at the end of July!
When: Saturday, July 30 • 10am-5pm (with a one hour break for lunch)
Where: The Ink Pad's classroom at the Westbeth Community Center: 55 Bethune St. (between Washington and West) • New York City
Contact: The Ink Pad website, 212.463.9876, theinkpad@aol.com
Stamped and Stencilled Pocket Journal
In this class I will show you how to make your own gorgeous "papers with personality" using stamps and stencils. The emphasis is on working in layers, understanding water solubility, color mixing, and creating pleasing compositions. I will also share how to make your own incredibly gorgeous handmade tape. We will use that tape to bind a hand-bound-no-sew-pocket-filled journal!
I'm headed to Chicago in August for Cloth Paper Scissors' second CREATE mixed media retreat of 2011. I will be teaching the three classes that I taught in Costa Mesa again!
When: Friday, August 26, 2011 • 9am-4pm (with an hour break for lunch)
Where: CREATE Mixed Media Retreat • Hickory Ridge Marriott • Lisle, IL (Chicago suburb)

Layered Images: A Stamp Carving Workshop
In this workshop you will learn the basics of how to carve stamps. You’ll learn how to transfer an image to your carving block, tips and tricks for masterful carving, and some helpful hints about using inks and paints with your stamps. But the real star of the parade of techniques is that you will learn how to create multiple layered stamps of the same image for a screen-printed look! This is a fun and easy class. You’ll be blown away by what you can create in just a few hours!
Students Should Bring: Speedy-Carve: at least two 6x12 blocks (It is important that it not be Speedy-Cut, you want the pink Speedy-Carve), linoleum cutters, glass mat or self-healing mat, white copy paper, pencil and pencil sharpener (no mechanical pencils), Sharpie or marker, 3-5 different colored ballpoint pens, box cutter, metal edge ruler, paper or fabric to print on, StazOn stamping ink in several colors
Optional (if you don’t want to draw your own image): clip art
When: Saturday, August 27, 2011 • 1-4pm
Where: CREATE Mixed Media Retreat • Hickory Ridge Marriott • Lisle, IL (Chicago suburb)
