June 2011 posts

After seeing so many people (Vintagepix, Pokey, Dharma Trading, google search)making awesome sun prints with Pebeo Setacolor paints, I knew that I had to try it for myself. So I ordered a set of the translucent paints -- the only ones that react with sunlight/heat. I immediately had a problem to solve: You have to leave the fabric and sun blocking material out in the sun for at least an hour. I have a very windy 17th floor terrace. How was I going to convince the fabric and the stencils (my sun blocking material) to stay put for an hour?... Read more →

Last night was the first Art Journaling Club! We had such a good time! Or at least, I did! It was so great to have some familiar students and lots of new ones...and a man! This is the first time a man has taken one of my classes. Paul was great - he's a watercolor-ist! In fact, everyone was great with lots of interesting stories and beautiful journals. Zieke had lugged *the biggest* art journal I've ever seen with her! And it weighed a ton! Chien had a big book too! We talked a lot about the idea of disrupting... Read more →

This summer I've been taking a class on Thursday nights at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). It's called "Drawing and Mixed Media Collage." Here's the description: Drawing from an artwork is one of the best ways to understand it. Taking note of the artist's compositional strategies and formal choices leads to a deeper understanding of the work. This course begins by examining drawing as a creative and reflective process in working from observation in MoMA's galleries. It will then evolve into an exploration of contemporary trends through hands-on studio practice. Students will learn how to use a variety of... Read more →

I'm pleased to share a new slant on my Live with Prima broadcasts. From now on I'll be focusing on techniques and ideas! On The Technique Geek show I'll showcase one amazing Prima product and explore its versatility. You will leave each class with an arsenal of new ideas and techniques to put into your own projects! I hope you'll enjoy the new format. Classes will be shorter (30-60 minutes), but still full of the goofy fun and excellent education you've come to expect from my shows! The new format will begin in July. July 11, 2011 at 8pm EST:... Read more →

People often ask me where to buy the Adirondack Color Wash that I'm so darn fond of. (I use them constantly, including in the background tutorial for the spread above.) There's a great online store called Artist Cellar that carries the full range of colors (as well as Crafter's Workshop stencils)! And the owner of that store, Lisa, was kind enough to send me a few of the new Ranger Distress Stains to try out! "Distress Stains are fluid water-based dyes for papers and other porous surfaces. Use for quick and easy ink coverage for backgrounds and larger areas. Mist... Read more →

Last week I mentioned that I was going on a road trip. And if you follow me on Twitter, you saw the photos and read all about it. Here's a quick recap: Day one was all about the drive. Carla was kind enough to drive in from New Jersey and pick me up in Manhattan. And we then began our long journey towards Cleveland. There was lots of pretty green to see. Carla and I traded life stories, crafty wisdom, and some thoughts on the industry. When we got to Cleveland we dropped our stuff off at the TV studio,... Read more →

This month's prompt at the Creative Therapy blog is: What's one lesson you would give a married couple? Or if you're not married, what's an advice someone gave you? My sweet husband and I have been together since 1996 when we met in college. Fourteen years together and I think our relationship is stronger than it has ever been. Someone once told me: Be kinder than you feel. And it has really worked for us! Like any two people we have bad days that follow us home. But being kind and being met with kindness ensures that no bad mood... Read more →
