Out of the Journal: Week Two

Dina Wakely and Samantha Kira are two very accomplished art journalers living in Arizona.  And they have hatched a wonderful challenge.

You can read all about it here.  Essentially, they are challenging you to get out of your art journal and start playing on canvas!  The challenge is to complete two canvases (larger than 8x10) each week.  Click here to see what I did last week.

This is what I did this week:

2Canvases-sm
Let's talk about the one on the left first.  I took this canvas that I did last week...

Readytocover
...and covered it with gesso.  I couldn't decide whether or not to cover the face.

Faceexposed
But in the end, I did.

Totallygessoed
I added some texture and let it dry.

Gesso-close
And this is what it became:

Butterflyhouse-sm
Butterflyhouse-sm
Butterflyhouse-sm
Butterflyhouse-sm
I'm not sure if it feels like "me" but I like it.  I'm letting it percolate.

The second, smaller canvas, started the day looking like this:

Lovely
I made it in January and it's kind of a mess.  So I peeled off the dimensional parts and gesso-ed over it and made this:

Flowercanvas
It just didn't feel right.  The flowers look stiff and weird.  So I flipped it over and added some black and white paint!

Fallingflowers-sm
Fallingflowers-sm
Fallingflowers-sm
Fallingflowers-sm
Much more "me."

Both canvases still feel a little unfinished, but that's part of what this whole experiment is about, right?  Just trying stuff and seeing what happens!

Thanks for stopping by!
