Make an all day art date!  We will spend the day transforming an ordinary old book into a fabulous piece of art.  Come and learn techniques for layering, collaging, painting, patterning, and cutting.  Whether you’re a mixed media artist, a scrapbooker, a stamper, a beginner, or an expert, these are techniques that you will take home and use.

The supply list looks long, but if you read it, I think you'll discover that you already have almost everything you need.

Students Should Bring:

  • Hard Covered Book with sewn pages (no glue bindings, you want a stitched binding)
    • A smaller book (under 7” tall) will be easier to manage.
  • 2 large Glue Sticks (I like the UHU brand)
  • Thin Gel Medium (ex. Ranger’s multi medium, Liquitex Matte Medium, Eco Green Crafts Matte Artist Medium)
  • Paintbrushes
    • Bristle brushes (no foam) in at least 3 basic sizes: small round, medium round, large flat
  • Jar or Container for Water
  • Rag and/or Paper Towel
  • Wax Paper
  • Decorative Tape (washi tape, tissue tape, patterned duct tape, etc.)  - you may want a few varieties to choose from.
  • Clear Packing Tape
  • Magazine with fabulous images
    • You want something that has interesting elements to use for collage – the Somerset Mags are great, CPS, Quilting Arts, any art magazines with full size pics of art.
  • Scissors
  • Exacto Knife and Self-Healing or Glass Mat
  • Acrylic Paint – any brand
    • 6-10 colors, including black
  • Paper Plate (or other paint palette)
  • A favorite poem

Things that are nice to have, but not required:

  • Heat Gun
    • Helpful to bring an extension cord and/or power strip as well.
  • Gesso
  • Stencils & Cosmetic Wedge Sponges
  • Baby Wipes
  • Relatively Flat Embellishments
  • Stamps and Ink
  • Brayer
  • Teflon Craft Sheet
  • Other colorants as desired (markers, mists, watercolor crayons, watercolors, etc.)
  • Apron

The first half of class will be spent creating our own unique papers for collage.  We’ll be flinging paint, doodling, and creating patterns.  In the second half of class I’ll show you how easy it is to create recognizable images with your collaged papers.  You'll walk out with at least one and maybe even two finished canvases ready to hang in your home!

Students Should Bring:

  • 2 8x10” canvases
  • 6-8 colors of Acrylic paint, including black and white
  • Paper Plate (or other paint palette)
  • Household Objects for printing: bubble wrap, plastic fork, toilet paper tube, chopsticks, toy trucks, etc.
  • an old credit card or ID
  • Cosmetic Wedge Sponges
  • Paintbrushes (bristle brushes – small round, medium round, large flat)
  • Jar or Container for Water
  • Book Pages
  • Ruler
  • Thin Gel Medium (ex. Ranger’s multi medium, Liquitex Matte Medium, Eco Green Crafts Matte Artist Medium)
  • Scissors – small sharp detail scissors are best
  • Wax Paper
  • Oil Pastels
  • Paint Rag or Paper Towel

Things that are nice to have, but not required:

  • Apron
  • If you want to create your own image (as opposed to using one of mine) bring a black marker and several sheets of plain copy paper.
  • Heat Gun
    • Helpful to bring an extension cord and/or power strip as well.
  • Stencils
  • Baby Wipes
  • Gelli Plate & Brayer

If you're thinking about spending the whole weekend with me (i.e. taking both classes), please do!  The techniques in the two classes are different and two days with me is twice as fun as one!  Each class is $85 and you can contact the store to sign-up at 978-887-6397.

I hope to see you there!
