100 Canvases: Canvas #1

I'm starting a new project:

100Canvases-sm
You might be able to guess the gist of the project from the information above.  ;)

Without any time limit, rules, or concrete plans, I am publicly declaring that I am going to create art on 100 canvases and share them all -- good and bad -- on this blog.

My Goals:

  • To become more comfortable with working large.
  • To push myself out of "pretty."
  • To experiment with colors I don't normally use.
  • To stop being so literal and try some abstract compositions.
  • To get better at making art through practice and experimentation.
  • To have a substantial body of work.
  • To learn more about painting.

My Obstacles:

  • This is a small apartment.  I'm not sure where I'm going to put 100 canvases.
  • Fear.

Here is my first canvas:

I think he is very striking.  And I love the way he fades in and out of the background.

This canvas has actually had a very long life.  I painted the current image over this image:

Which was actually a paint-over of this:

This is this canvas's third life!

For a long time I chased "pretty."  Right now I find myself interested in pursuing "interesting" or "arresting" images instead.  I'm excited to see where I'll be at the end of this 100 canvas journey!

All 100 canvas posts will be archived here.

Thanks for stopping by!
