September 2012 posts

One of the great luxuries of living where I do is that I'm about three block from the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). I try to make it there once a week and spend an hour or so poking around. On Monday I found a whole bunch of great black & white images. Here are my five favorite photos from that excursion. Matisse is truly the master of communicating so much with so few lines. The sheer scale of contemporary art always takes my breath away. I'm not entirely sure you can tell from this photo, but that canvas must... Read more →

Lately I've been starting each day with half-an-hour of computer time. (I use a wonderful free desktop computer app called Alinof Timer to make sure that I stick to that half-an-hour.) One of the things that I do in my half-an-hour is cruise Pinterest. On Tuesday I was on such a cruise and I found a tutorial so awesome that it made me stop, cut my computer time right there, and head to the work table! image source Essentially it's a way to make your own doilies with a bit of creative folding and some paper punches. The tutorial is... Read more →

Today I thought I'd share a few of the artful photos that I've recently posted on instagram. (I did sneak one food photo in, but I think you'll agree, that it's an artful plate!) I've said it before and I'll say it again: I am an instagram addict. I love being able to share work-in-progress! (And I adore peeking into other people's lives too.) Kelly Purkey was the first person who told me to get on instagram and I poo-pooed the suggestion for a very long time. She was right, though. It's super awesome and makes tweeting photos so much... To switch over: Click on that highlighted link. On the right side you'll see the word "subscribe" next to a blue plus symbol. Click on the plus symbol and choose your reader of choice.... I'm really excited to be teaching my Ruin & Rescue class at The Ink Pad this Saturday (September 29, 2012)! Here's the official description of the class: Over the years I have learned that my art journal is a great place for artistic experiments. It’s all about ruin and rescue. By discovering that virtually all “mistakes” could be “fixed,” I gained confidence and lost the fear of ruining my artwork. Come and spend the day learning a panoply of techniques for layering, collaging, doodling, and creating wonderful new things from the ashes of old projects. So what are we actually... Read more →

This last week I had an appointment way across town on the Upper East Side. Afterwards, It was such a lovely day that I decided to walk home through the man-made wonder that is Central Park. If you don't know anything about the history of Central Park, you can read up on it here. The not-so-savory beginnings of the park are easy to forget on a beautiful September day.... There was a young man sitting by the fountain sketching. It made me realize that in all the years I've lived in New York City, I have never once taken a... Read more →

"Come to the edge.' 'We can't. We're afraid.' 'Come to the edge.' 'We can't. We will fall!' 'Come to the edge.' And they came. And he pushed them. And they flew." ― Guillaume Apollinaire Our guest Ronda Palazzari sent me the quote above after we recorded the podcast. I'm sure that after listening to her thoughts you will agree with me that she is an amazing woman. Here's a little bit about her: Ronda is an Author, Mixed Media Artist, Scrapbook Designer, and an Instructor living in the burbs of Denver. Her first book of Art of Layers with North... Read more →

Washi tape and patterned tape are two different things, though people often confuse them. There are two things that are awesomely unique about washi tape: it's re-positionable it's translucent I've had good luck making lots of patterned tape (it's easy enough to paint or doodle on masking tape, medical tape, cloth bookbinding tape, etc.), but I've been unable to recreate washi. Until now!!! I've finally figured out how to replicate those two things that make washi unique, but with my own patterns! This is what I used: Deli Paper Cutterbee Scissors Life Strips Stencil 6x6 Life Strips Stamps 6x6 Pattern... Read more →
