November 2012 posts

I was taking a stroll down memory lane, through my photos, and I discovered some pictures I had taken several months ago. In April, while visiting my hometown of Watertown, MA, I went to the Watertown Mall and happened upon the annual exhibit of art from the public school students of Watertown. It was wonderful. Today I'm sharing five images. What talented young artists! I was blown away by the impressive variety of painting, drawing, and printmaking. I don't remember art classes being quite so awesome when I was in school, or perhaps I simply wasn't paying attention. After all,... Read more →

In March 2012, I wrote: I no longer wanted to be swept along. I was spending so much time and energy getting work done (class samples, instructions, assignments from manufacturers or magazines, etc.) that I hadn't been taking the time to experiment and play and fail. And I was scared that I was getting stuck in an artistic rut doing the same old things over and over because I knew they would work. I happen to be a great believer that all success rises from the ashes of failure. Mediocrity is all you get if you never fail. And yet... Read more →

Last year my friend Nathalie put together a wonderful free event called "Creative Jump Start." She asked lots of awesome artists to share a video detailing how they jump start their creativity. This is the video that I made: Creative Jump Start: Playing with Your Products from Julie Balzer on Vimeo. I made that video almost a year ago. Watching it again, I was inspired to make this tag: It's acrylic paint, a ballpoint pen, India Ink, and a tiny bit of patterned paper. Just the things that were sitting on my desk. If you're feeling blocked, try taking ten... Read more →

This post was originally posted on August 24, 2010. Hand painted bags are always a fun gift to give and receive. Enjoy! Each year my theatre company holds an annual weekend retreat. Here is a photo of all of us at the retreat: Each year I make a present for each of the company members. I've done t-shirts, jewelry, mugs, framed scrapbook pages, and this year I made bags. Everyone in NYC can always use another bag! I bought some plain bags at Michaels. They didn't have enough in any of the styles, so I ended up mixing two different... Read more →

I have a bunch of things that I want to share with you today, but they don't really fit together, so thusly, the randomness of this post. Art Journal Every Day: December kits are now shipping from Cocoa Daisy. I love seeing all the tweets and instagrams from when people's kits arrive! Here's another look at the stamp set that I designed for the kit: And some really nice comments have been posted in the online classroom: "Great job walking through the box with us.
