December 2012 posts

It's time for our December Book Club! Just as a reminder, each month I choose a crafty book from my bookshelf and create something inspired by the book. I hope you'll be inspired to do the same. This month I chose the book Journal It! curated by Jenny Doh: In an act of full disclosure: I'm one of the nineteen artists featured in this book. Jenny Doh has gathered a wide variety of art journalers into the pages of Journal It! Each artist is featured over several pages. You get a mixture of his/her artwork and comments on the process... Several months ago a blogger named Riikka contacted me and asked if I'd be a part of her Creative Christmas Calendar. Essentially, she's doing a kind of artistic advent calendar with a new project from a different artist each day until Christmas. She has hosted a wonderful collection of artists who have shared beautiful artsy holiday creations. I was featured last week with this tag: You can read what I shared about the tag here. See the whole series here. Also: I've been a very lucky girl with some nice mentions across the internet lately: I want to thank May... Read more →

I've been a painting fool lately! Ever since I shipped off my book projects I've been elbow deep in paint and canvas and happy as a duck! I tend to work on several canvases at the same time, so be prepared for many more canvases in the next few days! First up: I love this painting and I hung it up almost before the paint was dry! I have big dreams plans for 2013 and that phrase has been bouncing around my head non-stop. I think having the canvas hanging by my desk is going to be a great daily... Read more →

If you've done some art journaling this week and you've blogged about it, or put it on flickr, please leave a link in the linky list at the end of this post. Thanks! I have been continuing to work with my "Art Journal Every Day: December"... Read more →

One of the great things about going to see art in person is that you see so much more of the art. An enormous piece of art can be reduced to a little image on your screen or in a book. In person you can see the brushstrokes, the depth of paint and so much more! On a recent trip to MoMA (the Museum of Modern Art) I took photos of the complete work (far) and some close-ups (near). I thought you might enjoy seeing them! (It's a little Kandinsky heavy, but I can't help it. His work makes me... Read more →

Here is the player for today's podcast: If you can't see the player above, click here. Today's podcast features two very talented art journalers: Roben-Marie Smith Roben-Marie is interested in a lot of craft and art forms, including mixed media, art journaling, sewing and more. She likes to laugh but sometimes take things too seriously. She doesn’t like wearing shoes, would rather give than receive, is afraid of heights, is an introvert who works hard to be an extrovert and one day would like to say “making things for others” is her job! Roben-Marie shares her love of mixed-media art,... Read more →

Those two boxes hold eight months of hard work. Hard to believe that everything squishes down into two boxes. Now that I've shipped the boxes off, I think that I can comfortably say that most of my part of my book is complete. I still have step-outs to do and a photo shoot to go to in February. And of course there will be edits and changes and surprises that come up. It's a long journey to November 2013 (the currently scheduled publishing date). I do feel a bit of relief. This has been a surprisingly difficult process. I had... Read more →

I've got big plans for 2013! And they include TWELVE brand new online classes! Shut the front door!! These twelve classes are all part of the new Balzer Designs "Getting Started" series! "Getting Started" is all about getting you started with a wide variety of mixed media techniques and supplies. I have chosen a collection of my most-used supplies and techniques to share with you. As the moniker... Read more →
