April 2013 posts

I took three of the collages that I shared last week and mounted them onto wood panel canvases so that they could easily be hung up and displayed. I worked very hard to bring the patterns and colors from the collage on the front, around to all four sides. It wasn't easy to match up parts and pieces, but I think it really adds to the overall effect. It was complete luck that I had an extra scrap of that large black painted script paper. And it was total serendipity that it lined up so nicely. Thank goodness for happy... Read more →

Since I got some questions about it, I thought I'd share a bit more information about the Thermofax printing process today. You can take any image you want. For this example, I painted a quick quote with some watercolor and then photocopied it. (You need a toner-based image in order to burn the Thermofax screen.) I cut the copy down to size... ...and then cut a piece of Thermofax screen to match. I created a sandwich of cardstock, photocopy, and mesh, and fed it into the Thermofax machine. When it came out of the machine, the screen was attached to... Read more →

I recently attended a collage workshop at The Ink Pad. It was a very free form day, in which instructor Lynn Gall gave us some words of wisdom and advice up front and then set us free to play for the rest of the day. I made seven 8x8 collages: All of these collages incorporate found papers with hand printed papers -- Gelli prints, stamped papers (hand carved, of course), painted papers, and stenciled papers (much of it done on Deli Paper). Looking at them I'm struck by the fact that my collage work always tends to be painterly. This... Read more →

I recently stumbled across a contest that Bernina and their webiste We All Sew are running. It's a fabric design contest! You can find all of the information here. I've always dreamed of having my own fabric line and so I sat down this weekend and digitzed a few of the repeating pattern stamps I've carved over the years. Take a peek: link link link link I have to admit that I love them! As a side note, if you like these patterns, this is the kind of carving that I'm teaching at my upcoming stamp carving class at The... Read more →

Spring has (sort of) hit NYC. Perhaps it's wishful thinking, but the signs are all there: the flowers are blooming, the Naked Cowboy is playing his guitar, everyone is sitting outside, no more puffy parkas, and New York City just seems like a great place to live. The truth is that NYC pretty much slams from Winter into Summer and from Summer into Winter. But the 5-10 days of Spring and Fall that we get are some of the most perfect on earth. :) Here are five photos I've taken over the past week or two: I sure hope it's... Read more →
