August 2013 posts

One of the many reasons that I love living in New York City is the food. It is so good, people! There is a tiny little restaurant in my neighborhood that has quickly become one of my faves, called Danji. It opened back in 2011 and I think we were some of the first customers to try it out. Soon after, the reviews came in and they were stellar. Danji even received a Michelin Star! It's Korean fusion served as little plates, tapas style. I've never had a bad meal there. Friday night was no exception. We had an amazing... Read more →

If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here. All of the previous posts can be found archived here. There is a flickr group for sharing right here. Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day! No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week and you've blogged about it, or put it on flickr, please leave a link in the linky list at the end of this post. Thanks! The internet is such a wonderful thing. It's full of all sorts of... Read more →

I've been running like a crazy person lately. So many deadlines and so little time. It's a good thing to have lots of work, but I haven't been able to create anything just for me in quite some time. How delightful then to find a few hours yesterday to paint. I was surprised by what came out. Sometimes taking some time away can be a good thing. At least for me. I find that my style and my ideas seem to evolve internally and then come rushing out onto the canvas. I really like this piece, but it's quite different... Read more →

As I mentioned a week or two ago, Brother is releasing a very exciting brand new cutting machine in October, called the Scan N Cut. It's the first electronic cutting machine with a 300 dpi built-in scanner! There is absolutely no need for a computer. The machine operates 100% independently! I've been loving scanning in my handwriting, and cutting it out, as you can see on this scrapbook page: If you'd like to be among the first to know when the Scan N Cut is released, sign-up to be on the Scan N Cut e-mail list here. Very soon I'll... Read more →

As promised, I'm popping in today to answer the questions you left on last week's post about my weight loss journey. I've thrown in a few more before and after photos as well. Question: The question I have is... do you think there is something specific about WW that helped you to lose or do you think it was just because you made up your mind and stuck with it. I think it's both. I've been overweight my entire life and have struggled with my weight since I was a child. I know that I definitely approached Weight Watchers with... Read more →

I rarely scrapbook "just for myself" these days. I am doing Project Life, but I rarely do 12x12 pages "just for me." Usually they're samples for something. However, back in November 2012, just after we made the decision to get divorced, I found myself needing to express myself on a scrapbook page. I'm not sure why it had to be a scrapbook page, but it just had to be. I think I was inspired by the gorgeous chipboard feather, designed by the über talented Louise Nelson. She gifted me with a few of the feathers on her last visit to... Read more →

Last weekend I went to Coney Island for the first time! I've lived in NYC for 14 years and never been before. We got really lucky and the annual sand sculpture contest happened to be on the day we were there. How cool is that? The sculptures were very impressive and it saddens me to think that they have probably all disappeared by now, back into the beach. On the other hand, there's something lovely about ephemeral site specific art. It makes me grateful that I had the good luck to be there and see it. Here's a peek at... Read more →

I've always loved the tale about Hemingway's 6-word story. Sitting in a restaurant... Read more →

I got a few questions about how to do the sprayed boxed letters from yesterday's post, so I put together a quick tutorial for you! 1. Choose your letters. I find that chipboard is fairly durable for spraying and moving around. 2. Use a ruler to draw a box around your letters on a piece of heavy cardstock. You could also use a file folder or some stencil plastic. 3. Cut out the box. Be sure to use a sharp knife and to protect your table with a cutting mat. 4. Set up your letters inside the box you cut... Read more →

So, I was trying to clean up my blog draft posts and found this previously unpublished post from December 2010. I would say that the layout isn't totally the style I scrapbook in now, but I still really like it and I think the idea behind why I created is a good one. So, I thought I'd publish it now, 3 years after I originally wrote it. I'm not sure why I never hit publish? In any case, I hope you enjoy it! Jill posted this layout on her blog the other day: Brilliant, right? Those sprayed words so neatly... Read more →
