February 2014 posts

If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here. All of the previous posts can be found archived here. There is a flickr group for sharing right here. Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day! No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week and you've blogged about it, or put it on flickr, please leave a link in the linky list at the end of this post. Thanks! It's Valentine's Day! To celebrate, I thought I'd create an art journal page... Read more →

A heart is one of the easiest stamps to carve. That's why it's the first stamp I teach people how to carve in any stamp carving class, and even in my book, Carve Stamp Play. As a result of teaching it over and over, I have a tiny collection of heart stamps. I love hearts, I think you can do really spectacular things with them, depending on how you combine them. For example, I stamped out a fun piece of paper by mixing and matching this little group of heart stamps: Easey peasey! Of course, given that tomorrow is Valentine's... Read more →

Yesterday I was determined to whip up some quick Valentine's Day cards. I started with two main ingredients: White cardstock with messy painted handwriting and painted and printed deli paper. I mixed and matched those two ingredients to create 6 cards: I like the whole notion of mix&match -- taking what you have and exploring all the different ways to combine the same ingredients. In a formal sense, you could call this six cards "a series." I think it's fun to challenge yourself to make things different but the same. Thanks for stopping by! Read more →

I recently ordered some Pebeo Porcelaine pens and paints, along with some bowls to decorate. However, the pens and paints arrived way before the bowls. And you know what happens with new art supplies, right? Your fingers get itchy to start playing! Luckily, I received a free porcelain soap dispenser with my order, so I was able to get to work. In case you're unfamiliar with the Pebeo Porcelaine line, they're markers and paint that you can use on porcelain surfaces and then "fire" in your home oven to make permanent. Objects you paint can then be put in the... Read more →

I've got two upcoming live (on your computer) events. You can check in live and ask questions and hang out or you can watch the replay of any of these events. The best part is that they're both FREE! On Wednesday, February 12 at 2:30pm EST, I will be a guest on the Design Recharge show. The way the show works is that you can see both me and the host, Diane Gibbs, on camera. We'll be chatting about a variety of art and art career related topics. During the show you can ask questions in the chat section of... Read more →

Hope you're having a lovely Saturday! I thought I'd share a peek at what I've been wearing lately (under a pile of scarves and gloves and a really heavy coat). I'm currently obsessed with dresses... ...which has led to an obsession with leg warmers... ...because it's so darn cold that you have to layer. Speaking of layering, I've been experimenting with layering things (like a white blouse under a party dress)... ...and I've been wearing my black hoodie almost every single day! I think that I have owned that hoodie for 20 years! Some things you just can't let go... Read more →

I'm delighted to bring you another episode of the Adventures in Arting Podcast! If you do not see the podcast player above, please click on this link. You can listen to a podcast anywhere and at any time. It is a recording that is available to you whenever you'd like to listen. If you'd like to download it to your iTunes library, click here. You can also pause and rewind or fast forward as you desire. I like to listen to podcasts while I'm making art. It's a little like hanging out with friends while you art. Today we're talking... I recently went to the Chagall exhibit at The Jewish Museum here in NYC. They don't allow photos, so I will only share the brochure for the exhibit with you: I have loved Chagall's work for as long as I can remember. (You can read this post, which contains photos of his gorgeous stained glass windows at the Art Institute of Chicago.) At the exhibit at The Jewish Museum I was particularly struck, in seeing so many of his pieces together, by how much of a storyteller he was. I have always been drawn in by his colors and the... Here are photos from day two of class at Studio Crescendoh: Sharing circle is always an important part of class. Although it sometimes makes me want to sing Kumbaya, I think it's one of the major reasons to take a class -- a shared experience. Bonus points are always given to those who open their mouths when they pose for the camera. ;) I always learn when I teach. Always. It's one of my favorite things about teaching. So what did I learn this time? "Only you know when you need to poop." This is wisdom from Jenny Doh, which... Read more →
