June 2014 posts

When I made the journals I shared on Friday, I created a problem for myself: the journals don't fit in any of my existing bags. Because I do most of my sketching away from home, I needed to have a bag to put all my supplies in. So, I did what any crafty girl would do and decided to make a bag! I gathered my supplies... ...and very quickly I had a brand new bag for my sketchbooks and supplies! I lined the inside of the bag with a bright quilting cotton. I love that it has a zipper! So... I've been taking advantage of (a) the fabulous weather and (b) the fact that I've been home for more than a week, to be out and about in the city I love! Here are five photos of my recent adventures in New York City! I took my bike on the subway for the first time: I found the most grafitti-ed bathroom in the world: I spent some happy afternoons sitting in NYC's many parks, like Bryant Park: I got to hang out with my brother: And I ate lots of really good food (NYC has so many amazing restaurants): Thanks... If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here. All of the previous posts can be found archived here. There is a flickr group for sharing right here. Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day! No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week and you've blogged about it, or put it on flickr, please leave a link in the linky list at the end of this post. Thanks! One of the women on the Coney Island sketch group showed off her... Read more →

You'll recall the bumper cars from yesterday's post about The Coney Island Museum. Several of us chose to sketch them. You can see some of the other sketchers' sketches here, here, and here. Here is the sketch I did while at the museum: After that we wandered towards The Wonder Wheel! It's a ferris wheel that was built in the 1920s. It differs from a traditional ferris wheel in that some of the carts are not affixed to the wheel. They slide as the wheel operates. It's kind of a crazy rush when they move and you seem to swing... I recently attended an all day sketching event with the NYC Urban Sketchers. We started our day at The Coney Island Museum. I had never heard of the museum and I was so glad to have the opportunity to explore it. Our tour guide for the museum (and the day) was Coney Island resident artist and lifelong Coney Island resident, Marie Roberts. Marie was an *amazing* tour guide. She knows so much about everything Coney Island. It was inspiring! And her art is wonderful! She painted most of the large banners and posters that we saw -- both inside and... Read more →

By now I'm sure you've seen this video. And if you haven't, you must watch it. All by myself from Richard Dunn on Vimeo. Richard Dunn was stuck at the LasVegas airport overnight. In an empty airport with an iPhone, lots of time, and tons of creativity, he created this amazing video! You can see some of the behind-the-scenes edited out video here: I think it's amazingly clever how he attached his phone to the moving sidewalk and the escalator and used all the faces around him to create interactions (especially the ladies room sign). As his video demonstrates, being... Read more →

When other people have birthdays I see an opportunity for crafty fun! Is that selfish? My friend Bethany celebrated her birthday over the weekend and so I made her a little gift. I decorated the box top... ...with a small gelli print (that's the "Graceful Flower" stencil)... ...and a hand lettered ticket. I love a decorated box top. It's like a card that's included with the gift. The earrings... ...are glass beads on a silver wire. I hammered the wire to create the droplet shapes you see. They're beautiful and fuctional -- those droplets keep the beads on the wire.... Read more →

I'd like to introduce you to Nick. Nick is an awesome member of the Mixed Media Workshop crew. See that whiteboard he's holding? Here's a close-up: In order to synch up all the cameras in editing, Nick is supposed to write the episode (212) and then the segment (1) number on the white board and hold it up for each of the cameras. Very early on in the filming process, he started adding doodle drawings with captions. They are wonderful, whimsical, ephemeral art and I wanted to share a few of them with you today. I love that Nick just... Read more →

I always get super duper excited when people send me photos of projects they've made with my stencils. I recently got the following e-mail from Candy Bryant in Hawaii: I painted my table white and then used gold spray paint with the stencil I love how it turned out and wanted you to see! Hugs & Aloha, Candy It's fabulously gorgeous, right? What a great way to update an old table and give it a new life! I love it!! As a side note, one of the cool things about the Scallop Flower stencil is that I designed it to... Read more →
