July 2014 posts

Some interesting things I've come across in my internet wanderings that I thought you might enjoy too! FLAT PAINTINGS Alexa Meade paints people -- actually paints ON people -- so that they look like 2-D paintings. It's mind blowinging amazing! That is a living a breathing person! Be sure to click through the link at the top to see some of her other work. The grafitti ones, in particular, blow me away! THIS OBJECT DOES NOT EXIST Another artist playing with your mind is Felice Varini. He paints optical illusion art. Click through the link and you'll see that that... Read more →

As you know, I was at HSN (Home Shopping Network) last week. Here are a few peeks behind-the-scenes: This is Myriah. She's awesome. She makes everything ScanNCut related happen and she takes very good care of me on the road. I was disastrously sick on this trip, so I felt super lucky to have her. (In the photo she's prepping stuff for our segments.) Here's a closer look at the table: Lots of fabric projects. My friend Kacia made the quilt. You can see several different projects all made from the same basic doodles, and of course, I love cutting... Read more →

I'm delighted to bring you another episode of the Adventures in Arting Podcast! If you do not see the podcast player above, please click on this link. You can also pause and rewind or fast forward as you desire. I like to listen to podcasts while I'm making art. It's a little like hanging out with friends while you art. Today we're talking... If you've read my book, Carve Stamp Play, you know that the only block I carve stamps out of is Speedy Carve. However, I came across a product in the Blick online store that I had to try: Blick Readycut. It's a carving block that is made up of a thin grey layer on top of a white layer. The thin grey layer is intended so that you can see what you're carving as you're carving it. This is the stamp I carved: Here are my thoughts: I bought the block because I liked the idea that you could see... Read more →

Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day! No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week and you've blogged about it, or put it on flickr, please leave a link in the linky list at the end of this post. Thanks! Last Saturday I joined the Urban Sketchers up on the Columbia University campus... Read more →

Today I'm sharing my last two classes from CREATE! If you've never been to an art retreat, I highly recommend it. It's a wonderful opportunity to take classes from lots of different teachers and to meet a ton of wonderful like minded folks! People travel for retreats and it's so worth it! I had students from Florida, Canada, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Ohio, Puerto Rico, New Hampshire, Virginia, Maryland, D.C., Maine...and of course, New York and New Jersey! My best dressed student was Nichole: You've got to love a girl with a sense of humor as totally inappropriate as... Read more →

Two more classes from CREATE New Jersey to share with you today! You know I love helping people to fall in love with stamp carving! Here are a few peeks at my Stamp Carving 101 class! Back in 2011 I taught a class in San Antonio, TX. Leslie Tucker Jenison was kind enough to put me up for a few nights. On that visit, she brought me to visit her husband Tim's workshop. His workshop is several huge warehouses, by the way. He had a number of fascinating projects going on -- one involving pinball machines and one involving Vermeer. In case you don't know, Vermeer was a Dutch painter, probably most famous for the painting "Girl with a Pearl Earring." In the art world he has always been hailed as a master of light. He... I got a lot of questions about embroidery -- both generally and specifically about the piece I'm working on -- in my post about it last week. So, I thought I'd take a few moments to answer some of your questions. Q: Big question is....whatcha gonna do with it when its done....if its ever really done that is? A: I'm planning to put it under glass -- in a frame with a nice mat of some kind. As to when it will be done...that's a harder question to answer! Q: How much more are you going to do? A: As... One of the nicest parts about teaching at CREATE New Jersey was rooming with my friend Nathalie. Here are five photos that capture some of our adventures together. I took her Saturday night class and had a lot of fun! We snuck out of the hotel and made it to town for dinner one night! (As a side note, we used Über for the first time and it was fabulous! If you want your first Über ride FREE, use this code: ts6x9 when you sign up.) We even went thrifting! (Don't worry! I didn't bring it home with me!) For... Read more →
