Last week I was in Nashville for the Brother Back to Business Conference. First of all, I really want to say y'all to everyone I see, but it sounds weird coming out of my mouth. Second of all, I love biscuits & gravy, but thank goodness they're not readily available in my neighborhood or my waistline would be in serious trouble! Thirdly, I'm sorry to say that I hardly got to see Nashville because I was so busy at the conference. But I did have a lovely view of the city from my hotel room: I wonder what that tree... When I posted about working in my Gelli Printed sketchbook, I got a ton of e-mails from people confused about the process. So, I thought I'd share a quick breakdown of the process. To read about Gelli Printing in my sketchbook, read this post. My pages look like this when I start: Then I use a Pitt Brush Pen to create my initial sketch: It's a different method of sketching than I normally do. You're really working with an outline and that's hard for me. Then I take a Big Brush Pen and fill in the "empty" spaces with black.... Read more →

I taught my Sketchbook class at The Ink Pad in NYC a week or two ago to a sold out crowd and had a really great time. So many of the students introduced themselves with the announcement: I can't draw. And so I spent the next several hours proving them all wrong! Take a peek at the gorgeous sketches these talented ladies produced: After lunch we headed outside for some urban sketching! Because it was a hot day, most people got their initial sketch down and then headed inside to finish it off! Pretty amazing stuff for a room full... Read more →

I'm still getting used to working in my Gelli Printed sketch book. It's a different way of thinking about drawing and it's challenging me. A lot. But they say practice makes perfect. I don't think I'll ever reach perfect, but I'll be happy if practice leads to better. Riding the A train home, I practiced on some unsuspecting folks. I used three pens: Pitt Pen - brush nib, Big Brush Pen, White Sharpie. I'm going to continue practicing until I get better! What are you currently practicing? Thanks for stopping by! Read more →
I was inspired by yesterday's tags to create a mixed media collage. Can you see one of the tags from yesterday's blog post buried in my collage? I love how one of act of art can inspire another! It just proves my theory that the secret to making art is just doing something. As soon as you start, the ideas start flowing too! It's beginning that's the most difficult. Thanks for stopping by! So you know that I love empty toilet paper tubes. I use them all the time. But you don't have to leave them "as is." The soft cardboard is easy to form into lots of different shapes! I was super thrifty and cut my toilet paper tubes into smaller chunks in order to create six unique stamps. Well, the plain old circle probably isn't that unique...but let's keep that our little secret, okay? Once I made my stamps, I got to stamping... As you can see, I used acrylic paint on top of black tags. It's kind of a cool... Read more →
