October 2014 posts

If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here. All of the previous posts can be found archived here. There is a flickr group for sharing right here. Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day! No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week and you've blogged about it, or put it on flickr, please leave a link in the linky list at the end of this post. Thanks! Happy Halloween! No tricks today, just treats! ;) As you'll recall, last week... Read more →

I've been diligent about keeping up with my daily InkTober lettering. Check out what I've been up to: I'm kind of excited because I can see my lettering improving over the days! It's proof, once again, that practicing something every day really does help you improve! So, which of these lettered quotes is your favorite? Thanks for stopping by! Read more →

I'm off to Houston today for Quilt Festival. It's open to the public, so if you're in the area, come and see me in the ScanNCut booth! If you're not in the Houston area, I'll be posting my adventures to instagram! Did you know that this is an ir-resist-able week for stencil guests? Our second guest this week, Laura, is here with a fantastic tutorial on using gel medium and your stencils to create a resist! Thanks, Julie, for having me be a guest today! I pretty much fell in love with mixed media and stencils because of the awesome... Read more →

As I mentioned recently, my sweet friend Birgit came to visit New York from the Netherlands. Knowing she was coming, I wanted to make her a little something I'm calling a Birga-Box. A totally fun gift that looks just like her! If you glued a piece of acetate or plastic behind the face you could totally use these boxes for candy or favors at a wedding, bridal shower, baby shower, or birthday party! A couple things I learned along the way: I tried cutting the box out of different colors, but the black is the only one that looked "right."... Read more →

Karen is back with a tutorial on heat embossing through your stencils! This is one of my favorite things to do. Over time I have discovered that my beloved Ranger Heat It tool is not the best heat gun for the job. When embossing large stenciled areas, I recommend the American Crafts Zap heat gun. It melts embossing powder super fast! If you've never heat embossed before, it's kind of magical. Embossing powder will only stick to where there's wet ink. And since embossing powder is made of plastic particles, once it's been heated and melted, it's pretty impervious to... Read more →

The weather is getting cool and that means boots, baby! I love boots, but summer is just too hot for them. The colder weather is a welcome opportunity to break out my boot collection. (After all, they're the best way to camoflauge the fact that I have no ankle. I'm a cankle girl!) As a side note, I have extremely wide feet and large calves. I always have trouble buying boots. However, all of these boots are from Lane Bryant. I ordered them online and I'm very happy with them! The fit is great! I even have room in most... Read more →

Hello everyone and a big thank you to Julie for letting me on her blog, especially as she's the one who got me into stamp carving. My technique for you today is one I call 'bleach blocking' but without the horrid smell of bleach! This is a much more friendly and safer way to remove some of the colour from your background via your favourite stencils. I am showing you 2 examples today using Ranger Distress Stains and Inks but it can be used on any medium that's water soluble. I have chosen to use the new Ink Blending Tool... Read more →

After teaching at Bizzy B this past weekend (photos to come soon), store owner Barb and I sat down to decorate some pumpkins for the store. I grabbed some Gelli Prints on Deli Paper I made while teaching class that day and started collaging. It looked pretty cool... ...but it needed something to give it some punch. Black paint to the rescue! Barb also went for some black paint (and Bizzy B signature yellow, of course): And here the pumpkins are displayed at the store: Decorating pumpkins is a quick and easy and super fun way to spend an evening... How fun to be on a different blog today - thanks for inviting me, Julie! It's another great place to publicly acknowledge my obsession. My name is Win, and I'm a Gelli plate addict. Stencils, too and just about any kind of mixed media art-making. I love the combination of Gelli and stencils; it's rather like dark and chocolate - very hard to separate. I start many of my Gelli sessions with a textured background of Hansa yellow light for an underlying sunny look, and the subtle, unidentifiable 'something' it does to a piece. On these, I've used a handmade... Read more →
