Hi friends! I’m Carmen Whitehead. First, I want to thank Julie for being such a gracious hostess and letting me share some creativity with you today. I’ve been a huge fan of hers and her stencils for a long time. I remember watching a video she did on layering stencils and I was hooked on that technique. The wonderful thing is that she makes it so easy with her stencils. Today I’m using the Weekly Circles stencil. I’ve been wanting to create a calendar with my art journal for a while and these are perfect for that project and using... Read more →

This week I recorded an episode of the Paperclipping Roundtable podcast. As you can see from the photos, I make lots of funny faces when I'm talking and I gesticulate wildly. At one point during the voice-only recording, I raised my hand when I wanted to speak! In any case, give it a listen and see what you think! And now onto today's guest post from Kelly Klapstein. Hello everyone! I am thrilled to be invited by Julie to be a guest blogger today and am really excited to share some fun, easy techniques using some Balzer Designs stencils and... Read more →

This past weekend I traveled up to beautiful Exeter, New Hampshire. I had a very special chauffeur and class assistant. I had a wonderful group of women in two day-long classes. Take a peek at the fun we had: As an extra special treat, Penny brought the journal she made in my online "Make Your Own Junque Journal" class... ...and it was just so spectacularly amazing! I loved seeing it up close and personal! Thank you, Penny! Also, I want to give a special thanks to my hostess, Kim... ...for a lovely weekend of art making! My next teaching stop... Read more →

Hello and welcome! Thank you, Julie, for allowing me the opportunity to share with your readers. Its an honor to be featured here on your blog. Today I’d like to share my technique for creating gorgeous stenciled tissue paper prints to use in collage, journal pages and mixed media projects. Let’s get started! Gather your supplies: Balzer Designs Stencils (of course!) Tissue paper: printed/plain, sewing pattern paper, deli paper (matte side), gift tissue, bleeding tissue Spray inks Optional: Soft brayer, paper towel roll, acrylic sprays Next, cover your work surface - butcher paper, rosin, watercolor, newsprint, scrapbook paper - whatever... I recently found out about a really cool project called InkTober. You can read more about it HERE. Essentially, it's a challenge to do an ink drawing every day in October. I decided to do a hand lettered quote each day. Here are the results from my first week: Working in black and white has been difficult, but really interesting. I feel like the experience is also helping me to discover a few new "Julie fonts" for lack of a better term. I'm having a good time and I look forward to seeing where I am at the end of... I recently spent an afternoon playing tourist in NYC with my friends Birgit, Nathalie, and Jenn. We took the ferry past the Statue of Liberty. Check out my hyperlapse video of the experience: Loading Being a #tourist today in #NYC! #boatride #ladyliberty #iloveny #hyperlapse View on Instagram And then on to Ellis Island! Much of the museum is not there because of Hurricane Sandy. But there was still lots of interesting stuff to read... ...plus a beautiful building... While exploring outside we looked for our relatives on the engraved wall. I took a photo with some Balzers I didn't know,... Read more →

Happy Wednesday! Today's guest post is from Ingrid Kristina V. I hope you enjoy it! Hello! A big thank you to Julie for inviting me to share some of my favourite stencilling techniques! I feel very honoured to be featured on Julie’s blog! After the initial panic attack I gathered my supplies and got the job done! Today I’d like to share three stencilling techniques with you, dear crafty souls! Before I start I’d like to point out that the key to any successful art journaling is to know the properties and characters of the mediums you intend to use,... Read more →
