November 2014 posts

Before we get to today's guest post, I just want to share a peek at the project I'm teaching for the "12 Artsy Ornaments" online class: You can read all about the class and sign-up HERE. I think it's going to be a ton of fun! And now onto Lisa's fun watercolor and salt tutorial! As you probably know, salt interacts with wet watercolor in a wonderful way, and Lisa has a fabulous idea for mixing that technique with stencils!! Hi everyone! I’m Lisa VanDyke and I want to give a huge Texas size Thank you to Julie for this... Read more →

My Mom was here for a nice long visit and we did lots of fun things -- Broadway shows, visiting MoMA, tons of amazing meals, a lot of walking and talking -- but I think these five elevator photos pretty much sum up the visit best. Life is too short to take yourself seriously, you know what I mean? Hope you're having a great weekend! Read more →

I wear an apron almost every single day. I figured it was about time to have one with my logo on it. I used the new Heat Applied materials from Brother to create my apron. Here's a pic with my fingers for scale -- so you can see how small and detailed the cut is: Watch the video for the how-to: And one more photo: If you didn't want to do a logo, you could use a quote or an image. And of course, instead of an apron you could do a t-shirt or a tote bag. So many possibilities!... Read more →

Happy Tuesday! I wanted to share a link with you today. One of my online students, Zoe Ford, wrote a wonderful blog post about her experience so far in my online Junque Journal class. Her tweet just about sums up her thoughts on the class... ...and I hope you'll check out her post, which is full of colorful photos! Now onto our guest poster! Melita is sharing one of my most beloved and most used techniques. Definitely one of the ones I use in my art journal all the time. I hope you enjoy it! Hi there! My name is... Read more →

Like most people, I've got a decent collection of t-shirts that I don't wear because (a) they don't fit or (b) they're stained (especially true for white t-shirts). Instead of tossing them away, you can make super cute boot cuffs with them! Boot cuffs give you the look of socks or leg warmers, but without all of the bulk in your boots! First, you'll need a t-shirt. Cut a strip as tall as you want your cuffs to be. Now, cut the ring you've cut off into a long strip. Wrap the strip around your calf and pull a bit... Read more →

Pattern Leaf Stenciled Card Hi everyone! I’m Sara Naumann. First, a big thank you to Julie for being so gracious and letting me share my slight—okay, out of control—stencil addiction with you today! I love combining stencils with heat-embossing—it’s a great way to add texture, shine and dimension. It also gets double duty from your stencils and embossing powders. For this card, I’m using the Pattern Leaves. It’s one of my favorite stencils because it’s a great basic and it’s super-versatile. It’s also perfect for this stencil-embossed technique. I’m a step-by-step kind of gal, so you can check out the... Read more →
