Hi everyone. I’m Consie from Atop Serenity Hill and today I wanted to share with you how I used DecoArt’s decorating paste and a stencil to embellish a couple pieces of canvas that I then turned into a wristlet.
I started by painting two pieces of primed canvas (approximately 5”x7.25”) with Liquitex Basics in Cobalt Blue Hue, Cerulean Blue Hue, Phthal Ocyanine Green and Titanium White, adding some White streaks with a comb.
The stencil I decided to use was Julie’s Celtic Heart Bits because I loved all the little details I could choose from in addition to the overall design. I taped off one of the hearts and also a small “leaf” shape to create my flowers.
I used a skinny palette knife to scrape on the decorating paste through the stencil to make the flower heads and the leaves. The stems were done freehand. Tip: make sure you wash your stencil immediately after using the paste so that is doesn’t dry. It is impossible to get off after it dries! The paste takes 4-12 hours to dry depending on the thickness. I just left it overnight.
The flowers were base coated with a mix of Quinacridone Magenta and White; the stems and leaves with Hooker’s Green Hue.
To create some depth and to take advantage of all the texture from the paste, I drybrushed the flowers with Magenta first; let dry a bit; then White. The leaves were drybrushed with Hooker’s Green mixed with a touch of White. I then used my Inktense pencils (matching the colors as best I could) to add shading around all the elements to help them pop off the surface even more.
My next to last steps were to add a White painted scalloped border at the top, shaded with an Inktense pencil; add in some Sharpie and black Painter’s paint pen doodle marks; and lastly, a couple of White dots of paint.
Finally, I sewed the two pieces together, adding in a black zipper and a grosgrain ribbon handle. I found that the decorating paste was a great choice for the canvas because, when dry, it had the flexibility to handle being on a surface that would get used a lot. I kept the thickness of the paste fairly thin, so I’m sure that helped.
