January 2015 posts

If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here. All of the previous posts can be found archived here. There is a flickr group for sharing right here. Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day! No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week and you've blogged about it, or put it on flickr, please leave a link in the linky list at the end of this post. Thanks! Helloooooooooo! I hope you've enjoyed all the foiling tutorials this week. I had... Read more →

Today's foiling technique is so super easy and fun. We're mixing masking tape with stencils with transfer foil. Hey there! Today we're using glue on our stamps. A word of warning (because I made this mistake): Don't use rubber cement on the stamps! It won't come off your stamps. I tried a bunch of glues I had on hand and settled on Aleene's Quick Dry Tacky Glue. Note that there are glues specifically made for transferring, like Martha Stewart's Transfer Adhesive. I haven't tried it, but the reviews I read online are decent. I used some new Balzer Designs stamps in the tutorial. Have I mentioned yet that I released six cling rubber stamp sets at CHA (the... Of all the foiling techniques I'm going to share, this is the one with the most precise results. Foiling with a toner copy and a laminator gets you results like you would see on mass produced products -- greeting cards, scrapbook supplies, etc. Watch the video for the how-to: Martha Stewart Transfer Foil Sheets - Mediterranean Amazon Basics Thermal Laminator Westcott Detail Scissors Ranger Vintage Shiny Transfer Foil Sheets InLinkz.com Please note: The transfer foil I used is from a company that no longer seems to be doing business. Foil -- especially gold foil -- was a hot trend at CHA (the Craft & Hobby Association show). It was on so many supplies and projects and the Heidi Swapp's Minc foiling machine was one of the most talked about items at the show. It got me thinking that maybe I should share some of my favorite techniques for using transfer foil! It's easy to do and the supplies are readily available. I had everything I needed for the techniques I'm going to show you in my stash. In fact, every day this week I'll be sharing techniques for foiling!... Read more →

This week I flew down to Tampa to film several spots on HSN (Home Shopping Network). Here are five photos from my adventure! This is Myriah. She's the Product Manager for the ScanNCut and she's awesome! In the photo above she's prepping the projects between segments. After each time we film we need to reset the projects so that we can do our demos again! Hanging in the Green Room (a room with a closet, a makeup mirror, couches, snacks, etc.) with my watercolors. I must always have a crafty project (and a Diet Coke)! Notice my hoodie sweatshirt. The... Read more →

Here is the second of my Polke-inspired canvases: Again, this is a canvas that tells a personal story. I stretched the canvas myself and used an old paint rag instead of a piece of canvas. The white rectangle was added after the paint rag was stretched. This is another custom Thermofax screen I created. The texture of the paint rag (blobs of dried paint, etc.) gave the print a slightly distressed look. I'm not sure that this is pretty art, or even attractive art, but I do think it's interesting. For years I've been saying that I'm working on creating... Read more →

Happy Wednesday! Just a reminder, tune into HSN on TV or online and watch me do a ScanNCut presentation at 1 pm EST and 10 pm EST today. Also, there are five seats left in my Stamp Carving 101 class on February 7 in New York City. I'm teaching at an extremely discounted rate for the Brown Club of New York, but those last five seats are available to anyone who would like to sign up. More information here. Hello! It’s Natalie here, aka One Scrappy Doctor, waving at you from sunny Melbourne Australia (sorry if that’s just rubbing it... Read more →

Today I want to share two ScanNCut technique videos with you. First up is the Test Cut function. This is an easy way to make sure you've got your machine calibrated perfectly to cut whatever you'd like! Next, is a video that shows how easy it is to transform a .jpg to an .fcm file (the file that the ScanNCut cuts) in ScanNCut Canvas. I even show you how easy it is to edit an image in ScanNCut Canvas and remove unwanted parts! Here's a peek at the owl from the video: I hope you find these videos helpful! Thanks... Read more →
