Slow and steady wins the race. I hope that's true. I continue to work towards my goal of 100 canvases. I took a class at MoMA (The Museum of Modern Art) last year and created several canvases based on the work of Sigmar Polke. Polke is a really interesting artist. His work is made from a wide variety of materials and he used a tons of different techniques -- stenciling, screenprinting, painting, stitch, etc. I love artists who experiment with a wide variety of techniques and styles. I hope that I am always evolving. Here is the first of my... Read more →

Mom and I went to Las Vegas this week and one of the highlights was the Aquarium! The two aquarium tubes (you walk through an arched walkway with water on both sides and overhead) made me feel like a little kid -- full of wonder and delight! The fish were beautiful. I wish that I had brought my sketchbook because they moved way too fast for photos, but sketching could have been lots of fun! This particular aquarium had a whole kind of sunken world theme. It was lovely. I don't know about you, but I'm inspired to paint some... Read more →

My Brother asked me to make him some curtains for his apartment. He needed them to be blackout curtains so that his bedroom would be as dark as possible at night. So, we went shopping for fabric -- he chose two cloud fabrics and a blue Japanese print. I picked out some grey flannel wool to back the curtains. We went back and forth about the design. He wanted a single panel curtain with a tab top that he could simply push to one side. We debated where the dark blue Japanese fabric should go. There was even some additional... Read more →

Hi everyone! It’s Christy from Nassau, Bahamas. I am so excited to be sharing a project with you on Julie’s Blog. She has been inspiring me with her stamp carving for a long time. I must admit that I am now a stamp carving addict. However, every once in a while I encounter a creative block and just don’t know what I should carve. When this happens, I reach for a stencil to give me a bit of help. Today, I will be working with a few of Julie’s stencils to create embellishments for a Scrapbook layout. Stencils offer a... Last weekend I taught two classes at A Work of Heart in San Jose, California. On Saturday night I taught "The Stenciled Face." On Sunday I taught "Sketchbook: Yes, You Can Draw." As usual, everyone started class by announcing that they couldn't draw. By the end of class, I'm delighted to say that I proved them all to be liars! We had so much fun! What a great group of talented and generous women! Absolutely fabulous! Thank you to everyone who came out and played with me! I really enjoyed it! My next in-person class is in Santa Ana, CA... Hello everyone! It’s Jenn Shurkus here- from New England and Shurkus.com. I’m wicked excited to be here and thank you to Julie for allowing us to share on her blog!
