Art Journal Every Day: Junque Journal with Wood Burned Covers

ArtJournalEveryDayLogo-150If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here.  All of the previous posts can be found archived here.  There is a flickr group for sharing right here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it.  If you've done some art journaling this week and you've blogged about it, or put it on flickr, please leave a link in the linky list at the end of this post.  Thanks!

I recently ordered some Birch Panels from Dick Blick (like a candy store for art addicts!) and I decided to use two of them as journal covers.  I thought about painting them, but then I thought, why would it matter that they're wood if I paint over all the woodgrain?!  So, I decided to break out my woodburning tool...

Ouch!  The effect is super duper cool, but man did that hurt my hand.  Perhaps it's because I have a cheap tool, but it's a lot of pressure and moving very slowly to get the wood to burn.  I'm glad I did it, but to be frank, it's going to be a long time before I do it again.  I almost wimped out on the back cover, but I decided to push through and make it happen!  And I'm so glad that I did because I love love love my new journal, especially the end papers in the front:
