If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here. All of the previous posts can be found archived here. Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day! No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week, use the hashtag #artjournaleveryday so that we can all take a peek. Even if you're not on social media, you can see everything (from twitter, pinterest, instagram, and facebook) that uses that hashtag here. Today I wanted to share some of the amazing work that was hashtagged... Read more →

Hey everyone! I thought I'd share some photos from my recent trip to HSN down in Tampa, Florida. Coming from the Northeast, this view from my hotel room was most welcome: We even rented a convertible! It may have been cold by Florida standards, but I was thrilled to go coat-less. Of course, fitting all the stuff for the broadcast into that tiny car wasn't easy... ...but we made it work! Valentine's Day is rapidly approaching and we had a lot of love-themed projects on air. Here I am in the green room (a backstage waiting room) holding one of... Read more →

In honor of the fact that I'm on HSN today (in the 12pm EST and 4pm EST airings - with a possible additional airing at 11pm EST) showing off the ScanNCut, I've got a collection of ScanNCut techniques for you. I hope they'll be useful to you. You can view them anytime on my YouTube channel. The wireless transfer function is one of the super duper coolest and most useful features of the new ScanNCut 2. (Learn how to activate your wireless ready ScanNCut 2 in this video and here’s a video all about how the wireless transfer works.) In... Read more →

Thank you so much for all of your votes and kind words! You can see all of the winners here. Now onto today's post! ---- As I promised last week, when I showed off this project... is the video sharing my explorations of Distress Crayons: Before I sat down to make this project I had to know what the Distress Crayons could do. And I think that's a good general rule for all of your art supplies. If you don't know the pros and cons, the cans and can'ts (and every single art product on earth has pros and... Read more →

You guys, I'm giving Art Journal Every Day a little bit of a practical makeover to reflect the current state of the internet. No more flickr pool (that's so 2012) and no more linky list (that's so 2014). Instead, I'll be using and searching the hashtag #artjournaleveryday to share my work and find other people's art journaling. I hope you will too! If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here. All of the previous posts can be found archived here. My Mother was kind enough to take the family to Canyon Ranch -- a health and wellness spa in the Berkshires -- for a few days around New Years. Canyon Ranch offers non-stop health and wellness classes in every area -- physical, mental, spiritual, holistic, etc. I was delighted to discover that they offered art classes almost every single day! The classes are short -- about 90 minutes -- and geared towards beginners, but where there is art, there is Julie (and Mom)! We took a candle making class.... Essentially you dip a string and a bolt into a pot... Read more →

You guys, Colette was kind enough to nominate me for Art Ed Blog of the Year! I found out today that I have been selected as one of the finalists! Very exciting. If you get a chance, I'd appreciate it if you'd give me your vote (scroll down to the bottom of the page once you click through the link). Thank you!!! ---- I spent two days teaching my Big Collage class to a group of fabulous students at Jenny Doh's Studio Crescendoh! This was my fifth year teaching there. We had an absolutely amazing time making huge mixed media... Read more →

The major part of my week-long trip to Southern California was for the Craft & Hobby Association's annual trade show: CHA 2016. I taught a ScanNCut class... ...where, as always, my favorite part was meeting awesome people who love the ScanNCut! I also demo-ed in the ScanNCut booth (what a face in that first photo).... ...where I got to spend lots of time with my friend, Erin (above). And I shared a station with my friend, May, who made this beautiful display: (I stole that photo from her instagram feed!) We each made ScanNCut aprons. I'm looking a little liked... Read more →

I was absolutely delighted and honored when Tim Holtz asked me to participate in the Ranger Designer Challenge this year. We were each given a Dina Wakley Media Board and a set of the new TIm Holtz Distress Crayons. Our only instructions were that it had to be vertical and it had to feature the Distress Crayons. This is what I came up with: A number of people commented that this canvas didn't quite feel "like me." I don't know. I think I create in a number of different styles. But perhaps I'm wrong. What do you think? Does it... Read more →
