November 2016 posts

Hi, I’m Patty Eskridge from Elephant and the Owl, and I’m excited to be a guest on Julie Fei-Fan Balzer’s blog. I’ll give you step-by-step directions for how to repurpose an IKEA cardboard carrier into a stylish, colorful art caddy for your studio. A little about me: I am so happy to be able to spend all day in my studio making art! I’m a newly retired elementary school teacher and have begun my next career – being an artist. I have taught adult art classes, had several journal pages reposted on The Crafter’s Workshop IG, but this is my... Read more →

Here is part three of my Quilt Festival photos. There's plenty more to come, so I hope you're inspired by what you see! Whether or not you're a sewer, I hope you have some ideas for patterns and colors and design in your own work! I think many of these quilts could inspire greeting cards, paintings, art journal pages, and I know that my Carve December will be influenced by these gorgeous patterns! Thanks for stopping by! More quilts tomorrow! Read more →

You're getting two-for-one today. I'm combining the second installment of photos from Quilt Festival with the most recent Adventures in Arting Podcast -- which is all about Quilt Festival. In fact, we recorded the first two sections of this three-part podcast while I was at Quilt Festival. If you listen, you'll get a bit more of an in-depth perspective on being at the show. If you do not see the podcast player above, please click on this link. You can listen to a podcast anywhere and at any time. It is a recording that is available to you whenever you'd... Read more →

You guys, I mentioned this in the monthly Balzer Designs newsletter, but #CarveDecember is coming!! Hooray! What is #CarveDecember? It's a super fun month-long challenge to carve a stamp every single day in December. The stamps can be little... ...big... ...simple... ...detailed... ...stand alone... ...or part of a set... You can spend hours each day or just half-an-hour making stamp magic. Really? Yes, you can carve a fairly large and complex stamp in less than 30 minutes from start-to-finish. If you've never carved a stamp, I guarantee that it's easier than you think! If you need help: There are lots... Read more →

I was lucky enough to head back to Houston for Quilt Festival this year. Yay! If you're unfamiliar with Quilt Festival it's a ginormous consumer show (meaning it's open to the public). There's a very large "show floor" which is packed with vendors. Lots of fabric, sewing machines, thread, rulers, patterns, all all the usual quilting supplies, but you'll also find shoes, jewelry, clothing, and plenty more for sale! There is also a very large series of exhibition halls filled with gorgeous quilts. And when I say filled, that's an understatement. Over the next week or two you will see... Read more →

Come on down to Florida for four amazing classes with me at WhimSoDoodle! I'm going to be teaching Thursday-Saturday and it's going to be awesome! Here's the run down: Thursday night is a party, baby. A Gelli Print Party! In this three-hour workshop we’ll be using a Gelli Plate to make stacks and stacks of beautiful papers. We’ll be using stencils, stamps, fingers, string, and more to create colorful papers that are uniquely you. I will guide you through the easy set up that allows you to get the most out of every gelatin printing session. I’m even going to... Read more →
