Art Journal Every Day: 2017 Begins in my Art Journal

from the Balzer Designs Blog: Art Journal Every Day #artjournal #artjournaleveryday

If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here.  All of the previous posts can be found archived here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week, use the hashtag #artjournaleveryday so that we can all take a peek.  Even if you're not on social media, you can see everything (from twitter, pinterest, instagram, and facebook) that uses that hashtag here.

Closer and closer we creep to more recent pages!  Yay!  Finally entering 2017 and doing it with a bang!  I really love the faces on these pages and I hope that you do too!

This first page is kind of the outlier of the group because it doesn't feature a giant face.

There is a tag on the left side that flips out.

You may recognize the prints on the tags...they're leftovers from Carve December!  Almost all of my art tags end up in my art journal or on gifts or incorporated into mixed media collages.

This is a paper mask I used to print on a hexagon mini gelli plate.  You can see the print I made with it here.  It was too pretty to toss, so I glued it into my journal.  Two photos up you can make out the white outline of the surrounding paper.  But the writing does a pretty good job of camouflaging those edges.

This bird is another Carve December set of layered stamps.  See an image of the stamps here.  I added some pen work with a white and a gold pen.

All of this lettering may look like it was done with paint, but it's pens/markers!

I love this portrait.  It's filled with unusual colors and tons of pattern!

These spots (both the red and pink) were done with markers (Permapaques).

I'm a huge fan of creating *interesting* art work rather than pretty artwork.  They aren't mutually exclusive, but getting the two to mix is difficult.  And speaking of difficult, this page has a strip of Sticky Back Canvas running down the left side of the right page.  It was a bit tricky to get that surface to blend with the rest of the page, but I think it does!  You can really see the texture in these close up photos:

I slipped in the little white heart on the tip of the nose.  You have to look for a moment to see it.  I hope that all of my work is like that -- worth a second look in order to see more.

You can see that they're different (partially because of scale) and yet still go together.

This is a funny page for me.  I love some of the close up photos that I'm going to share below, but the overall effect is kind of a hot mess.  I think it's because it's just too busy with nowhere for the eye to rest.
