February 2018 posts

As a follow up on yesterday's post about making my own version of the Miller Goodman ShapeMaker Blocks, I thought I'd share these wickedly fun stop animation videos that other people have created using the ShapeMaker Blocks: There's also something called the Miller Goodman FaceMaker! This looks like it's right up my alley! The only question is, do I buy it? Or do I once again cheap out and try to make it?! Thanks for stopping by! Read more →

You guys, I am obsessed! I was in a game store the other day and I saw this super fun ShapeMaker toy from Miller Goodman: The heavy box contains 25 painted wooden blocks that you can flip and turn to create various "pictures." I was intrigued! But, the set was $40, so I left it behind and headed home. Hours later at home, I simply couldn't get the blocks out of my mind. Luckily, I had bought a box of 100 wooden blocks when I made my flipping cubes Valentine and had plenty of leftover blocks. I figured that all... Read more →

I don't know what it has been like for you, but February has absolutely disappeared on me. It's a short month anyway, but where has the time gone? Here's a little bit about life right now: What are you listening to? 20th Century Radio. I'm addicted. I stream these old 1930s-1950s radio plays on my computer while I'm working. Boston Blackie, The Saint, Dragnet, Box 13, Broadway is My Beat...lots of super fun cheesy stories to listen to. And all for FREE! What are you wearing? Black on black on black with colorful jewelry, of course! I actually put this... Read more →

I'm always trying to improve. Always. Towards that end, I've come up with a little art challenge for myself. I'm calling it "4x4 Abstracts" and I'm pretty sure the name gives you a clear idea on what the project is about: creating 4x4 abstract art pieces. My goals: Explore abstract art. Explore different styles. Take risks. Work quickly. Don't overthink it. Develop my abstract eye. Focus on composition. Make new art. So far I've created five pieces. They're all interesting to me for different reasons. I wonder if they'll be interesting to you? This is about as monochromatic as I... Read more →

Today I'm sharing some more profiles of artists who participated in #CarveDecember! First up: Tamar Golan Lev: Q: How many times have you participated in #CarveDecember A: This was my first time in #CarveDecember. Q: Why did you decide to participate this year? A: I don't like winter and I thought it would be a really good idea to participate in this great challenge and on the way to forget the weather... Q: How would you describe your stamp carving skill level? A: Every stamp carving improves my level and after this month I felt that my skills have improved... Read more →

It's the final set of photos from Quilt Festival! Can you believe it?! So sit back and relax and enjoy all the fabric and stitch goodness: I wouldn't say that I've saved the best for last...but maybe that I've saved **my favorite ** for last! I was gobsmacked by the Van Gogh Cherrywood Challenge. Same fabrics, size, and theme and so much wild variation. Amazing doesn't even begin to describe the experience. And PS: I didn't photograph every quilt in the exhibit.... Sigh. I could sit and stare at these quilts all day long!! I think that the average person... Read more →

Today I'm sharing my #homwork. It's not a typo. What is it? It's a series of challenges I discovered on instagram. Artist and illustrator Lauren Hom issues assignments every week. They're geared towards lettering artists, but you can take it in any direction you want. I discovered the challenge last week and decided to take the week 5 challenge: To create a Valentine that began, "I love you so much I would..." I ended up making two versions of the same card because I both overcomplicated and screwed up the first draft. This is version #1: It has lots of... Read more →

This is a super fun and easy project to do and a wonderful gift to give! I found the idea on instagram via 5.min.crafts. Essentially, the cubes flip to reveal the various images: While I was making it, I struggled a lot. The instructions in the 5.min.crafts video are a bit on the light side. I made a bunch of mistakes along the way. BUT, when it finally turned out, I fell in love with it. AND, I figured I'd make a detailed instructional video so that you could make one for yourself quickly and easily and avoid all of... Read more →
