Sharing Student Work
May 15, 2019
I'm currently working on some new online classes. But in the meantime, I've been meaning to share a few comments and some of the beautiful work that my current online students have made. The thing that's great about online classes is you never lose access to class. So you can work at your own pace, even if it takes you years!
From the Lantern Houses class:
from Sarah:
"I’m not the world’s greatest photographer but hopefully, you will be able to see them. I had a blast doing these. Some of mine are scaled smaller than 100% so that I could use gelli prints I’d already made that I loved. I printed out the template at 95%, 90%, and 85% if I remember correctly and cut it out then traced around it on the gelli print I wanted to use. (For obvious reasons, I was nervous about running an already completed gelli print through my printer.) After about 85%, the house got too small for the candle. (And thank you for the recommendation, Julie. Those are the best candles I every bought.)
I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoyed making the. I’m getting ready to pack them away for the season and am sorry to do so as they added so much light to the holiday, but I’m planning to expand the flock for next year."
From the Notan/Expanded Square class:
"Hi Julie, I have Totally Loved this course! So much fun. Sorry to not post any pictures, but that isn’t something I’ve quite figured out yet. For the 2 faces, I did a picture of my husband and I … and was proud that everyone who saw it recognized us! I found I really enjoyed the cutting and gluing processes, so for sure will be doing some more.
All of your tutorials were great – I got a little bored during the balance exercises, but pushed through as I knew the exercises were good for me! The reference materials were excellent, and I particularly enjoyed and learnt a lot from them. The references in this lesson were really inspiring, especially (for me) the ones re stencils and repeating patterns.
Yesterday I stitched all my homework into a book. Sorry to be done, but counting on the fact that I can come back, review, and find the references again." -- Karen
From the Gelli Journal class:
"Super class! Love that I’ve found a way to travel with colorful art projects that can get through security. I appreciated all the ideas on how to use the journal as a sketchbook, as a place to practice lettering, as just a way to relax." -- Shannon L.
"I also loved the class! I have long been an admirer of your lettering and was especially pleased that you included a lesson/demonstration of shadows. You shared a great to problem solve on a practice sheet. Being a visual learner, and a calligraphy/lettering enthusiast, I found your diagrams to be an interesting breakdown of the exercise. Thank you for that added bonus. I was continually frustrated that my brain could not figure out how to successfully do shadows. Loved your travel kit. I am excited to now Gelli print inside journals. I did not want class to end. I look forward to reviewing a few classes as I take the plunge. I love Gelli printing and at times find it addicting. This class combines both loves. Thank you again for continuing your practice of growing as an artist and educator." -- Julie H.
"I love this technique of using the small plates to add pops of color. That stencil with all the different textures is perfect for this and I have one! (I recently asked myself what it was really good for. Now I know…) Other small stencils will be great for this too. You’ve done a great job of clarifying the ins and outs of color, opacity/transparency and contrast. Even though I’d figured it out over time, your videos are going to help me to focus more sharply on making choices based on what I’m trying to achieve. This whole unit is really well done. Kudos!" -- Robin
from the Make Your Own Junque Journal class:
"Thank you for another wonderful class! I learned so much, sloppy stitching and all. My next journal will be even better. The greatest is that my family was so impressed with my work. Your teaching style is fun, easy, and I love how you make us “novices” feel like part of the tribe. On to the next class…" -- Lisa
"Love my Junque Journal!! Thank you so much for a great class! I really especially appreciate the way you make it so easy with materials I already have, and techniques that I find easy to apply." -- Karen
From the Book of Color class:
"I am loving this class. I’m finally taking out all of my supplies and using them!
I finished my red panel today." -- Marci
