Two Replays: May Book Club & Social Media Panel

Grab a cup of coffee (and maybe a mindless art project).  Today I'm sharing two replays of recent live events.  First up is May's Book Club, which was hosted on Facebook Live:

This month's book was Maria Shell's book, Improv Patchwork.  In the Book Club video, we talk a lot about value and I share several tools for ascertaining value, such as a gray scale value tool and red & green value tools.  If you watch the video replay on my Facebook page, you can read the comments in real time as they were posted during the live event.  Press the triangle where it says "most relevant" and instead choose "realtime comments."

Here are my 8 best tips on using instagram for your art business:

  1. Be consistent.  You don't have to post every day, but try to establish a regular cadence.  For example: Monday, Wednesday, Friday.
  2. Be yourself.  People either like you or they don't.  It's never a good idea to try to convince people that they should like you.  Your audience -- the people who respond to your art and your voice will find you.  Let your freak flag fly.
  3. It's about creating and serving your community, not fandom.  People follow you because of how you make them feel, not who you are.  You can be relatable or aspirational.  But make people feel some way about you.
  4. Hashtags help make connections.  Thoughtfully use hashtags to help other people find your work and connect with you.  It's a bit of a Goldilocks situation.  You don't want to make it too broad a hashtag and you don't want to make it too narrow a hashtag.  It has got to be 'just right.'
  5. Instagram is more than your feed.  Your photo feed is important, but Stories, Reels, and IGTV are vital parts of a social media plan.  They can bring in a new audience -- even within the app.  Be thoughtful about how you use each of these aspects of instagram.
  6. Post when your audience is online.  Look at your Insights to see when your audience is online and post then.
  7. Engagement is key.  The algorithm is based on engagement.  Do people like, comment on, and save your posts?  Do you have conversations with them in your comments section?  Instagram wants to show people what they want to see.  So the algorithm prioritizes content that they've interacted with.
  8. Make the next step easy.  If people like what you post and are ready to move to the next step with you, make it easy for them.  In your bio tell them what you want them to do (take a class from me, visit my shop, etc.).  Be sure to include a link they can tap (or a link tree).

Instagram is a wonderful tool for making connections, finding inspiration, and building your business.  It can also be toxic.  Remember that everyone is putting their best food forward on instagram and the only person you're competing against is yourself.
