A New Vincent van Gogh?!
July 18, 2022
Have you heard the news about the new Vincent van Gogh painting discovered by the National Galleries of Scotland? "Hidden from view for over a century, the self-portrait is on the back of the canvas with Head of a Peasant Woman and is covered by layers of glue and cardboard," the museum said in a statement on Thursday. You can read this NPR article about it.
It's such an exciting discovery and a fascinating conservation/restoration problem. Reading about it made me want to revisit some of the beautiful van Gogh artwork that I've had the opportunity to see over the years. I think the most impressive collection of his work that I've had the chance to view in-person was at the Musee d'Orsay in Paris. (I blogged about my visit to the museum back in 2018 and you can check it out in two parts: PART ONE and PART TWO.)
I've included a few of my faves from that visit below -- lots of close-up so that you can see all of that gorgeous impasto texture and detail.
On my bucket list is visiting The van Gogh Museum in The Netherlands. Have you been? If so, I'm totally jealous...but I also want to hear all about it!
Thanks for stopping by!
