Getting Back to Visiting Art
March 28, 2023
Visiting art is one of my favorite things to do.
Pre-baby and pre-pandemic (aka pre-2020), I visited a museum...
...or a gallery or an exhibit of some kind weekly.
I visited museums in other towns...
...and attended classes and art talks...
...and lots of events at art museums.
But now…I’m lucky if it’s once every two months.
So, I’m working on changing that and getting back to weekly art adventures because they fill me up.
(And, actually, I have to thank The Artist's Way for reminding me of that. Tomorrow, during Book Club, we will be covering week 4 of the book!)
Visiting a museum with my son is not the same as visiting it on my own. He's simply not interested in most of it, which is normal and fine. But he's also big enough now that I can't push him in a stroller or carry him. He wants to walk around and that means, no time for reading signs or taking photos. Both of which, I enjoy.
Here are a few snaps from the days when I could take him to a museum because he was more portable:
I was talking to another mom on the playground yesterday and we both agreed that having a child had shattered our lives. We built new wonderful lives.
But different lives.
And in my new wonderful life I want to make sure that there are still some parts of it that are about nourishing me -- like visiting a museum or a gallery.
When I became a mother, it’s not that I lost sight of who I am. I know myself. But my priorities changed and I always put myself last on the list. I’m ready now to move myself up the list and get back to visiting art on the regular.
