Collage Faces: Class #3

ClassLogo
A few weeks ago, I wrapped up my three-part live online Collage Faces class. For class number three, we focused on troubleshooting, backgrounds, bodies, and finishing touches.

For instance, I shared how to take this perfectly great collage...

..and make it even better!  It's more complex, more interesting, more layered, and more nuanced.

Much of my focus in class was about embracing your personal style and I think you'll fall in love with the beautiful and unique work from the students.  I asked if any of them were willing to share their work on this blog and several of them kindly agreed.

And Karen used the class lessons and feedback from the message board to make this lovely face...

If you'd like to join in on class, all the video lessons are downloadable, the message board is still open and active, and you can work at your own pace.  Here's a bit of feedback from the students in class:

  • "Julie gave us volumes of content. Each of the three sessions were kind of a stand alone lesson...how to create wonderful and interesting collage papers, then how to create a collage face, background and the elements within the face, and then finally how to fix the problems once the face was created....and then our work magically came together. I, for one, had never created a face and felt really great about the collage faces that I made and the unbelievable amount of info that I learned. Julie is a gifted teacher who has created and organized classes where students can succeed and make leaps in their work. A fabulous teacher makes all the difference. Thank you Julie!!!!"
  • "Julie’s classes are always fantastic and Collage Faces is no exception. Julie takes you through her process with clear step by step for a beginner and leaves plenty of room for a more practiced or confident artist to riff along. For me it was a fantastic exercise in value and contrast. I improved my portraiture skills exactly how I was aiming too."
  • "I learned so much in the Collage Faces class. 1. To prepare - in terms of value and texture - papers in advance. 2. To be aware of facial structure and proportions, but then do as you wish. 3. To just do it - if it's isn't right/beautiful/my esthetic, then problem solve. It can be fixed! This class was fun and instructive."
  • "Julie is such a good teacher - giving loads of information without overwhelming - giving lots of time to practice the concepts - and so full of useful feedback, tidbits and helpful ideas! I'm very glad I took the course - it was Excellent value!"
  • "I learned so much in this class. I learned about the structure of faces, more about collage, that all mistakes are fixable, that each collage is unique and can be pushed until you think it’s finished. The format is terrific —- instruction, time to work in class, feedback, and homework."

My next live online class will be in September.  It's called "Botanical Monotype Collages."  It will be a similar format -- 3 sessions on Zoom supported by an online message board for between classes.
